The wait is finally over for candidates who sat for the first day of the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. JAMB has officially confirmed that results for all candidates who wrote the exam on Thursday, April 16, 2026 — the very first day of the nationwide examination window — will be released before midnight on Friday, April 17.

This announcement was made by JAMB’s Public Communication Adviser, Fabian Benjamin, in an official statement posted on the board’s verified platforms. The statement read in part: the results will be released before midnight, and an official announcement will be made and posted on JAMB’s page as soon as the results go live.

For millions of candidates and their families who spent months preparing for this moment, that announcement changes everything. The score is either already there waiting for you, or it will be before the night is out.

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE 2026 UTME?

April 16, 2026 marked the official commencement of the 2026 UTME nationwide. The examination ran across accredited Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres in four daily sessions — the first session starting at 8:30 AM and the final session running from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

This year’s UTME is one of the largest in the history of the examination. A total of 2,243,816 candidates registered for the exercise, representing a 10.5 per cent increase from the 2.03 million recorded in 2025. Lagos State recorded the highest number of registered candidates, followed by Ogun, Oyo, Kaduna, and the Federal Capital Territory.

About 940 Computer-Based Test centres are involved in the exercise. JAMB had earlier delisted 23 centres across several states due to technical deficiencies recorded during the mock UTME, and those candidates were reassigned to new approved centres before exam day.

The board also adjusted the first session arrival time from 6:30 AM to 7:00 AM, following widespread complaints from candidates and parents about the difficulty of very early morning travel. That single adjustment made exam morning significantly less stressful for hundreds of thousands of candidates across the country.

HOW TO CHECK YOUR 2026 UTME RESULT RIGHT NOW

There are two ways to access your result, and both are straightforward. Choose whichever works best for your situation, but for Now only the first method works simply because the CAPS is not activated

METHOD 1 — VIA SMS (NO INTERNET NEEDED)

This is the fastest and most accessible option, especially for candidates without reliable internet access:

Open the messaging app on your phone

Type UTMERESULT — all in capitals, no spaces

Send the message to 55019 or 66019

Make sure you are sending from the same phone number you used during JAMB registration — this is critical. If you send from a different number, the system will not recognise you and will not return your result

Ensure you have at least ₦50 airtime on that line before sending — that amount will be deducted as a service charge

Your result will come back as an SMS within a few minutes, showing your scores in all four subjects and your total

Save that SMS immediately after it arrives. Screenshot it, write it down, or do both. Do not assume it will stay in your inbox forever.

METHOD 2 — ONLINE VIA JAMB PORTAL

For candidates who want to view and potentially print their result:

Open your browser and go to https://efacility.jamb.gov.ng

Log in using your registered email address and password

Navigate to the result checker section

Enter your JAMB Registration Number

Click “Check My Results”

Your result details will be displayed on the next page

Screenshot or print for your records

Printing the full result slip attracts a fee of ₦1,500 payable via debit card or other online payment options on the JAMB CAPS portal. For admission purposes, most institutions will require the printed result slip — not just the SMS score — so it is worth keeping that in mind.

MY RESULT IS SHOWING “NOT YET AVAILABLE” — WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Do not panic. This is one of the most common concerns candidates face in the hours after results are released.

When you see “not yet available,” it simply means JAMB has not yet finished processing the results for your specific examination session. Results are released in batches as the board completes verification and quality checks for each session. Your result will appear — it just may not be ready at the exact moment you check.

Check back every 6 hours. Most “not yet available” results appear within 24 to 72 hours. Resist the urge to keep refreshing every five minutes — it creates unnecessary anxiety and the result will come when the processing for your session is complete.

If after 72 hours your result still does not appear, the issue may be related to biometric verification at your centre. In that case, visit the nearest JAMB office with your examination slip and explain the situation in person.

WHAT SCORES ACTUALLY MATTER FOR ADMISSION?

Now that you have your score, the next natural question is — what does it mean for your chances of getting admitted?

The general JAMB cut-off mark is 140 for universities and 100 for polytechnics and colleges of education. But individual universities and courses set their own cut-off marks, which are usually much higher. Medicine typically requires 260 to 300 and above, Law needs 250 to 280 and above, Engineering wants 220 to 260 and above, while courses like Economics or Mass Communication need 200 to 240 and above.

Scoring above the general 140 minimum tells you that you are eligible. But eligibility and competitiveness are two different things. What matters in the end is how your score compares to the departmental cut-off of the specific course and institution you applied for.

If your score is below what you were hoping for, do not make any decisions in the first 24 hours. Give yourself a moment to process, then look up the specific cut-off for your institution and course. Options like JAMB’s change of course or change of institution are available for candidates who need to recalibrate their plans based on their score.

WHAT COMES NEXT AFTER CHECKING YOUR RESULT?

Results are now being released on a daily basis as the examination continues. The 2026 UTME runs from April 16 through April 25, meaning candidates writing on different days can expect their results to follow the same pattern — released within 24 hours of their exam date.

Once results are out and the examination window closes, JAMB will convene its admission policy meeting where cut-off marks will be officially confirmed for universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. The CAPS portal will then open for institutions to begin admission processing, and candidates will be notified through the e-Facility platform.

For now, check your result using the steps above and take a breath. You studied for months, you showed up, you sat the exam. Whatever the score says, it is the beginning of the next chapter — not the end of the story.

Visit www.jamb.gov.ng for real-time updates as the board releases further results throughout the exam window.
